West Coast In The Rear View

I jumped in a van with three friends. The plan was to drive straight through from Santa Cruz CA. to Richmond VA.. The other three had already been driving in the van for over 2 weeks, so they had their sites set on their own beds. Unfortunately,for me, I was rested and ready for the open road. We Left monday morning and rolled into Richmond on wednesday afternoon. Here's a few snaps from the blurry 3 days.

I try not to make plans. I'm bad at it. When i do make plans, they usually don't work out. This is what i've learned about plans. when plans fall through.... its an opportunity to Wing it. And i prefer winging it over planning it. Unfortunately, this means i go into planned situations, hoping plans fail.

Last winter I spent 5 months in Austin Texas. I went home for the summer and planned my return back to Austin as soon as it cooled off. I bought a plane ticket to Austin for the beginning of january. Then i got a call from Steve, asking if i wanted to go on a road trip to Savannah GA. It was for the same time that i booked my flight back to Austin, I didn't get on the plane. I was winging it.

After the Savannah trip i was sitting in Richmond VA. looking up flights to keep to the plan, to get to Austin for the winter. My friend Was driving from San Francisco to Florida with his sister. She mentioned they might have room in the car and they were driving through Austin along the way. I bought a one way ticket to San Francisco.

2 days before my flight, I got the news that there wasn't enough room in the car for a third person after all. I was stoked. Not that i wouldn't have been happy driving with some friends to Austin, But now this gave me an opportunity to do some serious winging it on the west coast. Here i am with a one way plane ticket to the other side of the country, and the only people i had really talked to are leaving there in a few days..... The possibilities were endless.

I ended up in Santa Cruz, Surrounded by some of the nicest people i have ever met. And making some amazing friends along the way. All because my year of planning fell through.....twice

In search for the giant cup of coffee

The trip home is getting started. we are in search of the worlds giant cup of coffee. Animal Chin Coffee. We looked for it on US 1. Found this again.

Crandall asked Ron Wilkerson if he knew where the giant cup of coffee was.

He checked the cargo pockets of his JNCO's but didn't find it.

Then we partied at the Santa Cruz bike park. I saw the same tank top in a few different colors, Nun-chucks were in full effect, but still no giant cup of coffee

Soaking up my last days in California. It's been perfect. Crandall, Paul, and Kenny made it out here a few days ago and i met up with them in San Francisco.They were all hung over. Paul was puking when i walked into the house.

It's nice to be back in the Vandal. It will be my home away from home again for the next few weeks as we drive from here back to Richmond, VA.

Ben Lomond is a small Mountain town outside of Santa Cruz. Its named after the Mountain to the West. It's also the home to my friend Jackson's mom, who was away on vacation and asked us to come stay at the house while she was gone.

I went in the hot tub 4 times throughout Saturday.

I ate amazing home cooked food all weekend.

I rode bikes with my friends at a skatepark that reminded me of home. And i took this picture of Jackson.

The last month in California has been great. But the last week has been the best part. I spent some time secluded in a tent in the woods. Spending a few days in the woods alone could be the best way to bring someone back to reality. Unfortunately, reality doesn't seem like a sought after destination for most people.

I went to the grocery store twice in the past week. Both were nightmares. Long hair and a beard seem to make people think you are super market terrorist.

The first time was trying to buy some granola. I think that middle aged man sweeping the floor thought i was going to sneak a couple snow caps in my bag for the road.. He tried fake sweeping around me for a while but didn't want to seem too obvious. And then when i looked down at the end of the isle and saw him watching me like a hawk through the window in the swinging door, I couldn't help but give him a wink and a wave. He stressed so hard that he decided to come back out and just blatantly stand next to me and watch me.
Code red. a bearded man in pursuit of a bag of granola and two oranges! call for back up.

The second one was a nice treat. After spending the week in a tent, cooking my food on the fire, and spending a lot of time by myself, I decided to go to the grocery store to do some people watching.

Safeway seems like a decent grocery store. way too much stuff, star bucks, ice cream, sub shop, chinese buffet, pizza slices, a million lunch deals .....You know, the usual things you would find in a grocery store? I went for the 3 chicken tenders with the sides of mac and cheese and potato wedges. I go sit down at a table by the window and start feasting.

Over the loud speaker i hear a voice say "security to the deli. Code whatever"

2 hefty ladies come sprinting across the front of the grocery store!! hahahahahahaha

they ran up the the deli bar and talk to the lady behind the counter. The 40 year old employees of the month snap around and size me up. Their big break. Time to bust a criminal

They tell me i have to stop eating the food and both ladies escorted me to a register. They made sure to stop and stand in front of the doors as we walked by them. I'm assuming they thought i was going to make a big break for the streets. I really just wanted to to eat a peaceful lunch and buy a bag of coffee for the road,

Mike let me borrow a tent since the tree house had to get ripped down. Before i fell asleep on the first night, i was laying down looking up through the screen on the ceiling, at all the stars. i remember thinking "its a good thing mike doesn't have the cover for the top of this tent, or i would have put it on and not had this beautiful view of the sky". I fell asleep and woke up in the middle of the night. it was pouring rain.

Woke up and started dialing in a nice area. after this weekend, i will be out there for the next week. and i can never get enough of the view from the front door.

I think i got the tree house blues when i found out i had to rip the tree house down again. I'm not going to build another one because that was the perfect tree. A tent will have to do for now.

The tree house dilemma

it took me about 4 hours to get the plywood up into the tree. I made a harness and dragged a sheet of half inch plywood to the top of the hill. It took a while but it felt good to get it up there on my own. When i finally got the the tree i rigged up some ropes to get it up on the deck. accomplished, would be a good word to descibe how i felt after spending a whole day getting a sheet and a half of plywood nailed onto the deck. Thats when i met Reagan.

sitting on the newly plywooded deck, soaking up the view, A guy yelled up from the bottom of the hill. "Hey I think you might be in my tree". The feeling of defeat took over the feeling of accomplishment. Reagan was a nice guy. I actually enjoyed the conversation i had with him, but, unfortunately, it ended with me having to tear the tree house down again. I dont have the money to buy more supplies to start over in a new tree, I'd say living in a tree house would be an accomplishment for me, its something i have always wanted to do, but its going to have to wait until next time.

Really excited about the move. The new tree is dialed! I got a bunch of 2x6's to build the floor with. And it was a lot easier to frame up the platform the second time around. Got it done in a day.

Living in a Tree

When i came to California, I had one thing i wanted to do. Live in a tree. A new friend named erik told me i could build one on his property up in the hills just outside of Santa Cruz. I went up a few days ago and found a tree. The one i chose was all the way at the top of the hill, in the middle of no where, with a view out into a Valley. The sun sets right on the other side of the hill.

Mike hooked me up with a kick ass hand saw and erik let me borrow a hammer. In three days i got the platform built and ready for plywood.

Today i sat up on that platform for hours. eating an orange and soaking up the warm breeze. STOKED! Erik came up to check it out. And then he told me it was on his neighbors property!!! We had a laugh and then i tore it all down. It came down kinda quick, which makes me question how strong it actually was. I found a new tree and started over. Excited that i have a little practice now.. the new one will be even better.

Adios tree. it was fun while it lasted.

BICYCLE MOTOCROSS

I can never get enough of watching people ride BMX bikes like BMX bikes. Going fast, jumping stuff, and not giving a shit. HER-NAN-DEZZ is a prime example. Just trying to ride some BICYCLE MOTOCROSS with his friends. I can't help but throwing up the fist and yelling "YEEW" when i see people getting rad on their bikes.

Rode jumps all weekend with friends on the other side of the country. New spots, new friends, same good times. Everyone got awesome. Jackson is still nursing a bad ankle so he didn't take a ton of runs. But, he took a few photos of us enjoying the blue skies and blue grooves.

A weekend on the 40 (part one)

The Freedom 40. 40 acres of heaven. We spent the weekend there, riding bikes and sleeping and cooking by fire. Had a really good time riding mountain bikes. Jackson referred to Santa Cruz as the Austin of mountain biking. The 40 had a bunch of awesome mountain bike trails, littered with berms and jumps and bridges. My camera died but Jackson took some snap shots for your viewing pleasure.

The campout was the cats flaps. The grill was loaded with food for 2 days straight. Ate 4 meals over the fire, and we ate like kings. At one point, we were cooking pizza on the grill. compliments of the Murph himself.

I can never get enough fire food. I wish I cooked every meal over a fire. Swaths for days by HER-NAN-DEZZ. Zucchini, carrots, mushrooms and more, all wrapped up in tin foil and tossed on the fire for a few hours. Magically delicious.

Woke up to perfect weather and perfect jumps. We were taking runs before 8AM.

Ivers and the twins head home

Ivers and the twins headed out on friday, back north to San Francisco. But before they left, we had the ultimate day trip. Woke up in the AM and rode with Jackson at the Santa Cruz park, before he had to go to work. The full pipe looks like a wave, and Ivers was surfing the shit out of it.

After Jackson headed to work, we took a short drive to a Pool just south of Santa Cruz. A few weeks ago, I read an article this guy Dean wrote about the Buena Vista Pool. I remember thinking " Thats a sweet looking pool, but i will never see that thing". And here we were, skating it and loving it.

After the pool, we drove a couple exits back towards Santa Cruz and ended up at a ditch with a full pipe at the end of it. I am still stunned at all the spots to ride around here. All minutes away from each other, and all amazing. It was really tricky to ride but John was somehow roasting the vert wall attached to the full pipe.

We stopped at Panther beach, which is just north of Santa Cruz. Hike down a hill, go left, walk through a giant rock arch? and you're in the zone.

It says alot about the view, when people that grew up their entire lives seeing a sun set over an ocean, are watching in awe at another one. We hiked around on some rocks for a bit. Thought we were going to get stuck in a cave. Finn was stoked, running around on the beach.

Climbed up on a cliff and watched the sun go down.

southbound journey

Finn, Ivers, John, Jeff, and I packed up the bus and got on the road. With the first stop at the Pacifica skatepark. Only 20 minutes outside of San Francisco in the bus, it made me thankful to not be on my BMX pedaling over some of the coastal hills. The park is awesome. i ate shit on my skateboard after 10 minutes of being there. Woke up on the flat bottom. John did a pedal stall to fakie on the 12? foot tall cradle at the end of the pool. it was crazy

The drive down US 1 is beautiful. The western coast looks nothing like the east coast.

Jackson sent me some info about a skatespot along RT 1. We found it but 1/3 of it was a puddle. The other 2/3 were a blast though and we skated and rode it for an hour or so. Not a bad view.

But not as nice as the Sunset view from Panther beach.

South to Santa Cruz

I was going to pedal down the coast from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. There is a few skateparks along the way and a beautiful view for the whole 70 miles. Ivers and Jeff were down for a road trip, so now the three of us are going to cruise in Ivers bus.

One day in San Francisco

Long flight. I think close to 8 hours. I Jumped on a train and cruised into San Francisco to meet up with some friends for the night.

Jeff and company were the best hosts. Breakfast in the morning and a bike stand and rack of tools to get the bmx back on track. Got the bike together and went to the potrero skate park to meet up with Cubby and cruise around the city.

Met up with Ivers and skated the flower shop. Watched Tim destroy that place. Cool to see the locals ripping around on stuff thats so hard to skate. All the lines. They had just finished a big bowl corner at the end, but we couldnt rip it yet.

One of my last days in Richmond, I went riding bikes with Evan. We had plans to ride a skatepark In Laurel, that has a 10ft vert ramp and a weird tranny bowl. Sounded like a recipe for a good time.
We got stuck in traffic for a while. And when we got there, the park, for some reason, was locked up for winter for 4 months. It was 60 outside.

With the Nazi town park rangers lurking around. Jumping the fence wasnt going to happen. We jumped in the car and drove another hour (which should have taken 15 minutes) back to where we started. All of a sudden, It was like a light bulb went off in Evans head. He turned to me and told me he has the perfect spot for us to go to. "you are going to love this place". We pulled up to this spot.

In front of this 3 foot long sketchy box jump, there was another 3 ft long sketchier box jump. The ribs had blown out on the left side. stay right or get bucked.

Evan was right. The perfect setup. I loved it.

I lost my camera a few days ago and this morning i woke up with this idea in my head to go look in this parking lot for it. It was sitting in the middle of a parking space, untouched. I'm pumped.
Richmond has been great. Riding bikes all day. Mountain bikes in Richmond is the cats trousers. Holiday got back from Puerto Rico. Always a good time with him. Made some good food with Chef Holiday the other night. Didn't think i was going to be able to post any of these pics of his disgusting pony tail. I'm glad i found my camera.

Rode Pats pool again. It was even better the second time.

I grew up riding dirtjumps. before i knew what bmx was, we were riding dirtjumps we built somewhere. My favorite thing about riding jumps, is that it hasnt changed since i started riding.
The last thing i want to do is watch "Lil Stevie" muscle his way through a 1080 bunny hop or do a bunny hop truck driver with a paper bag on his head. Or watch Someone do a tailwhip barspin flair to caserole over a box jump. Dirt jumping has remained untouched by the bull shit, come up, internet influenced bmx. You see the same tricks from 20 years ago. The simplicity of someone doing a toboggan or a tire grab over a double, is still in tact. Or doing nothing but jumping a jump. In the woods no one cares what you can do. no one is impressed with the circus act. I cant tell you how many times i have seen someone do some crazy trick over a dirtjump and nobody acknowledges it, and then 10 seconds later someone hits the same jump and kicks out the back end with style and everyone gives him a yell. Trail riders are a different breed. They work hard for a place to ride. and that appreciation comes out in their riding.

Bicycle riding

Evan told me that the mountain bike trail in Richmond that goes around the James river, wins awards all the time for "best urban mountain bike trails in the U.S." And i wouldnt doubt it because the trail is a blast to ride and beautiful. Evan has an extra mountain bike so we went for a morning bike ride a few days ago. We hit the big one and headed out. you have to pedal for less than a mile and over the river, to the head of the trail.

We took our time riding the trails. hitting fun hills, jumps, bridges and whatever else, multiple times. The trail goes through an old civil war bunker on the island. lots of old buildings. My camera battery died but i got a few pics of the good times.

Driving

When people go on road trips, the main focus is usually a destination. What about the space between point A and B? Long hours driving in the car. music playing. looking out the window. Talking to whoever your sitting next to. That could be the best part of the trip, But it usually gets rushed to get to the destination sooner. Last day of the trip. Chilled extra hard. Skated the bowl barefoot for a while. love skating bowls with no shoes on. the bowl felt like trails. Evan layed it flat with his foot off. Crandall carved over some stairs in a pool corner. Banners shut it down.

Savannah night life...

"Wanna go to a house party?" "yes."

Everyone went to that party. It was a house warming for 2 girls, Kat and Meg, and the house was jammed with people. Someone threw a cup of beer in Kenny's face and he beat the shit out of him. i was inside dancing in the living room.

I saw a drunk girl try to use a hula hoop and eat shit. it looked like she was trying to hula hoop laying down in the middle of the living room.

I had brought a few roman candles to the party and layed them around the house in random spots. I wanted to see who would end up shooting them. I was sitting next to the fire and a random guy just walked into the back yard and started blasting one off. one of them bounced off a tree branch and almost hit steve in the face. At some point he saw a roman candle laying in the house and decided to blast it.

I went over and introduced myself to him. he was awesome.

minutes after the roman candle guy. Latane did a keg stand. as he was getting let down, a guy walked by with a huge tray of corn. yelling something about how stoked he was to have a tray of corn. Latane accidentally kicked the tray out of his hands. I was almost video taping it, it would have been awesome. but heres a picture of Latane having to pick up the corn in front of everyone heckling him. It was a good time..

I love late night breakfast food missions. Pancakes at 3AM? Yes please.

We decided to go to a diner thats open till 4AM that was right by our hotel. We grabbed the table next to 4 women that we started a conversation with about Hamsters. We talked to them about everything. 2 of them gave half their food to Kenny. They left and we finished our food. We were about to leave and the waitress comes out the front door with the resturaunt phone asking " are one of you named eric?". It was Mel. One of the ladies we had been sitting next to. She asked us if we wanted to go over to her house and told me she had some turn tables we could use.

We dropped a few guys off at the hotel and Kenny, Ruel, Evan, and I went to hang out with Mel. She was one of the nicest people i have ever met. She had a husband who was surfing in california and 2 sons. Her husband and son played music so they had a dialed jam space. Wormz and I jammed for a bit.

I slept in Mels 5 year old sons bed. spider man sheets and finding nemo pillow cases. Monkey slept with me the whole night.

We didnt go to sleep until after 6AM. we had to get up at 8:30. Mel made us coffee and cut up a bowl of strawberries. We sat in the gazebo for a bit and relaxed in the sun.

Just in time to stop at south of the border. I walked over to the fireworks store across the street while everyone was in the gas station. I walked in and Evan walked by with his arms already full. The first thing he says is " They sell Morters in south carolina".

Got to Charleston early. Got a crappy motel room. Went to a bar with Bill Mims and things got really weird..Wormz and i were lighting off firecrackers in the back of the bar. Wormz was trying to orchestrate a firecracker symphany with 7 strangers. One was a doctor. He broke up a pack of firecrackers and handed each person one. The first one he lit blew up in a girls hand instantly. Some guy rounded the corner as i was lighting mine. I got kicked out of the bar for lighting off firecrackers. they tossed me out the back door and when i walked back around to the front of the bar, Wormz was already waiting for me and then a limo pulled up. Wormz opens the door ,asks if we can get in, gets the approval, and we are in a super stretch SUV..I wish i could say full of babes... but there was only one babe in there and she was a cute red head. but she was allll the way on the other side of the limo so.and the only one not wearing makeup. i was stuck on the other end with the crazy spanish girls.

Wormz was eating a chicken wing. finished it and dropped it in a cup of champagne. The birthday girl was so drunk, she grabbed the chicken bone cup and toasted all her friends with it and drank it.

7 dudes, ALF, and a hitchhiker started with a short drive in The Vandal from Richmond VA. to Fayetteville NC. Forgot to go to the bathroom and buy food at the gas station, but i bought 3 sets of fake teeth.

This trip is the perfect crew of dudes. Chunk said Wormz was his favorite dude to travel with. I get it. Evan is always a treat to travel with. Down for an adventure. And everyone likes getting weird.

after spending my last day in new england riding bikes with friends from 10 am to 2am, i was pedaling back to vics house by myself. I jumped over 3 christmas trees that people had tossed in the street for the trash man to pick up. The next morning i was on a bus with a very loose plan.

i was sleeping on the bus before it was out of providence. i woke up and we were driving through Harlem. The perfect start to a long adventure. The bus drops you off in Times Square. An overwhelming amount of people and taxi cabs. New York City.

I pedaled around for a bit, checking out the scenery. Met up with steve and grabbed some breakfast with some people i didnt know. they were all awesome.

Jumped in the van and headed south to Richmond VA.

Plans changed again... I bought a plane ticket from Boston to Austin for the 10th.. but now im sitting on a bus heading to new york city for an entirely new adventure. This summer, Lino and I had talked a few times about driving to Rye New Hampshire to ride the Vert ramp at "The Airfield". 12 1/2 feet tall with 2 feet of vert.

Fuck making plans. I will go months without making a plan and then when i decide i should try to keep plans with someone, i somehow manage to make plans with someone else...for the same time. then im that guy who breaks plans with people (which i am).

There are people out there that plan out their entire lives. Have the same routine they do, and if they stray from the routine, it makes them uncomfortable. sticking to the same plan.

a few months ago i got a sweet job that would last me the month of december and go till the middle of january. The pay was good.. about $1000 a week for 6 weeks. In my head i was thinking " its only 6 weeks and i will have 6000 bucks". It seemed like a no brainer. i was going to save the money and use it for the world trip i have always wanted to do. BIG PLANS!

i stayed up here instead of going to texas in november. the job was supposed to start december 2nd.. its the 27th and still no start. my big world plans are now in shambles. I spent the last of my money on a one way ticket to austin. i have a back pack and my bike. i parked my bus and im gonna hit the road for a bit. My flight is in January, so im in providence helping vic with the shop during the crazy season. I stayed at the shop last night in my hammock..Life is chill.

I always have a hard time expressing my appreciation about stuff. which, unfortunately, can come off as me being un-appreciative. But i appreciate all the great friends that i have become closer to this summer.

Vic took a couple guys out for a dinner the other night..... to the nicest resturaunt i have ever been in.
"Al Forno's". which translated in my mind as "El Forno's" or "The Forno's". Meals that were half the size of the meals im used to eating but twice as expensive. But The Forno's is definitely a quality over quantity resturaunt. The place reminded me of that movie Ratatouille. Thanks for the great time .

the last warm days of the year are clicking by right under your nose. Hibernation in the north east has usually already kicked in.. but for some reason, its still tolerable to be outside. so why wouldnt you put off your chores for a day in the 20's, so you can relax near a fire surrounded by trees and sun light.

Christmas has nothing to do with a guy named Jesus ... There is no way that people acctually think a guy was born of a virgin birth. The facts are cut and dry. The sun gets lower in the sky until dec. 22nd, it stays the same for 3 days and on the 25th starts moving back up in the sky and making the days longer. the story of the "SON" being born on the 25th has always been about the "SUN". Unfortunately, people play dumb and choose to believe in god instead of facing reality, when you die, you rot in the ground, not live in the clouds with wings and angels.

But this doesent mean that people that dont believe in the fairytale of christ, dont enjoy the holidays.

jakes house experience

i like putting myself in a situation that seems uncomfortable at the time, but when its all said and done, im laughing about it later. The other night at jakes house was one of those nights. His 2 roommates, Erin and Katie, were having a party at the house. homemade pizza and weed rice krispie treats was the food options. Jake wasn't getting out of work until after 10 so i decided to head over early, alone. The house was packed with people, all in a rice krispie mindset. i didnt know anyone there. i awkwardly small talked with a few strangers that clearly had a much larger I.Q. than me. it was weird. my best bet was to eat some pizza, eat some rice krispies, and find a nice space to sit and watch everyone.

i chose a spot on the couch. no one else in the room with jakes adorable cat on my left and a record player on my right. a perfect view into the kitchen.

2 rice krispie treats was a bad idea. they kicked in and i melted into the couch, with "UB40" playing in the background and a cat on my lap. no one else in the room. that was where i stayed for hours. Jake finally came home at almost 11:00. he stayed just long enough to eat a rice krispie treat and sit with me on the couch for about 15 minutes, then he left. someone sat next to me and i took a picture of their sock.

ive spent the last 6 years migrating south, the minute the temperature drops below 40°. maybe running from the fact that my home, where i grew up,and where i will always come back to as soon as the temperature starts climbing back, has a 3-4 month period of cold weather that is almost unbearable for me. yea, snow and winter are not something to "run" from. i would say its more of a run TO something than a run FROM something.
I live in a bus, and because of its small size and constant movement, the majority of my time is spent outside. usually in the woods somewhere. when the cold weather starts taking that away from me.... i run to a warmer outside. Every year its the same thing. enjoying myself in the fall in new england, content, no worries. the cold air rolls in and im stir crazy and restless to stay warm without having to wear 2 jackets.

its that time of year again. the annual restlessness and stress are kicking in and telling me to get outta here before i have to shavel the bus out of a snow pile. Last year was the first time in my life that i left before it snowed and came back after it was done. a winter without seeing snow. perfect. This year is going to be different. im trying to flip my routine into a summer of travel and a winter of dialing it in. it could be a summer of a life time......

the ground officially froze at the trails up here in new england. rode them one day and the next day they are done for months. bummer. since jake and i have been building this new line at the trails, i have been going to get breakfast or lunch at the same grocery store across the street every time i am out there. and i am reminded every time im in there, how shitty people can be. i am usually wearing dirty clothes from digging all day and i have long hair and a beard. every time i go in there, within the first 2 minutes i start getting followed by someone. im guessing they look at me and stereotype me as a thief because my clothes arent nice?
the store is a fancy, wanna be whole foods with a free coffee bar for customers. yesterday i bought a muffin,apple,clif bar,bag of almonds and a box of tea. i went to the coffee bar to fill my small thermos with hot water. the guy that was following me around the store was now moving cans of nutella around to look busy so he could spy on me and make sure i didnt do anything wrong. im guessing that he saw the dirt on my jeans and must have assumed that i was an idiot. i think i would have rather him just openly stand next to me the whole time i was in there. as soon as i go to fill my thermos from the hot water valve on the side of the coffee maker he got his big break! FINALLY, I CAN YELL AT HIM FOR SOMETHING!! he walks over immediately and says "the coffee machine is not to be used to fill your thermos with coffee". i sarcastically replied with "yea i figured that, thats why im only filling it with hot water to make the tea i am buying from your store.but im sure you saw me pick the tea up off the shelf since you have been following me around since i walked in the door?". he didnt like that too much and walked away.. i decided to follow him around for a little while just to mess with him, wherever he went i just stood 5 feet away and adjusted jars of soup and cereal boxes. unfortunately, people will always act like that.

Grubsy is a homeless guy that lives in the woods at the trails. hes seen some shit,done way too many drugs, and now enjoys the simple life. im sure nothing has ever gone his way in life and he might be crazy but he seems like a pretty happy guy.
today i was out at the trails alone and he strolled up with 2 packages of chicken and asked if he could cook them over the fire. i sat down and talked to him for a minute and realized he was saying the craziest stuff i have ever heard... so i turned on the video camera and let it roll for a half hour.

jake and i spent all day yesterday out at the trails, working on the new line that we started. its going to be the biggest line at the trails so we decided to name it "wimpee". there was a line called cowabunga that used to be here but with one of the pits being a lake and the jumps going uphill, we decided to pint it in an easier direction.

the next jump is going to be small...

spent a couple of hours digging in the dark next to a fire again. got the whole lip stacked up taller than me.. cant wait to hit a 6 foot tall roaster

its 9AM... time to get back out there and keep stacking.

well my time in plymouth massachusetts is done. i watched more tv while i was there, than i have in a couple of years combined, and didnt ride my bmx once the whole time out there. life out there sort of revolved around working, eating dinner, television, and sleeping... repeat. not exactly my idea of a good time, but i enjoyed the change of pace.
to make up for time lost while i was there, i came back to providence and spent 4 days straight digging and riding at the cumberland trails with my friends. this is the season for the trails to grow and evolve in the north east. perfect digging temperatures with stackable moist dirt. jake and i built a new line out there this year and with justin's keen ability to fine tune a dirtjump....we were able to get it running to the end (which is a really fun long and low for now).

i spend alot of time in the woods. i'd say that 60% of my free time is spent in the woods some way or another. its free...not in the money sense.

when lindsey was here we walked out to the end of the jetty in plymouth. i was thinking it would be fun to try and ride out there on a mountain bike across the rocks.

so thats what i did this morning.. woke up early, made myself a nice breakfast, and rode a mountain bike to the end of the jetty. and it was perfect.

theres really no better way to spend your free time, than outside.

but lindsey half creeps me out because she looks exactly like my sister sometimes...

after not having the bus for the whole summer, and now finally getting the inside dialed in a little bit, it was exactly where i wanted to spend some of my time on thanksgiving. i woke up early and drove the bus over to my friend jimmys, where ryan jimmy and i decided to go water skiing. the water was so cold, it made your bones ache. ryan and jimmy wore wetsuits but i kinda felt like that was cheating. if you are gonna go water skiing in new england on thanksgiving... you might as well do it right.

they might have been smarter than me though... you could see your breath in the air and i dont think the water was much about freezing temperature.

i had a master plan... i was convinced that if i started on the dock i could get up and go around the lake and come back by the dock and just let go and coast up to the dock and not even get wet... i made it about 200 feet off the dock and ate shit because i was numb. the water was so cold it was hard to breath.

ryan on the other hand, all cozy and warm in his wetsuit, was ripping around the lake. i saw him crash so hard he was skipping across the water on his head.

after we warmed up for a bit, i hit the road and headed to providence to spend some time at the trails to enjoy my thanks digging. no one was around to get the keys to get the tools so instead i just sat out there for a half hour,clean the mess someone left out there, and left.

the bus finally looks decent inside. it has been a shit hole all summer and i finally built a new bed in there and i cooked up a nice thanksgiving meal. mac and cheese and beef stew johnson.

thanks giving was topped off with the best jam session i have ever had with emerson and domenic the donkey. he haw he haw

i once had someone say to me "life isnt all about having fun".

i thought about it for a minute and realized,while it might sound childish to say "i just wanna have fun for my whole life", there is nothing wrong with focusing your attention towards having a good time. i've realized that the more time i spend focusing my energy towards a life of enjoyment, the less time i spend worrying about anything else.

this weekend i spent all of my time in providence hanging out with all my friends. the weather was perfect and Saturday morning my friends mark and nick and i pedaled around providence and ended up on this great old abandoned draw bridge. (well...mark and i ended up on the bridge...).

after nick headed to work, mark and i traded the big wheels for the 20 inchers. we only made it 50 feet from circuit and just rode this awesome curb hip forever.

after all the good times riding bikes, it was off to amigos where the band the i am in played a show with another band named party pigs. the party pigs played a great show and it was really awesome to be able to open up for them. thanks again nick and kerry and everyone else who came out.

the countdown until i make a break for the border, is always hectic.. there is so much stuff to be done before i get outta here. the bus is in shambles and it gets dark at noon. the weather has been more than perfect up here the last week and its looking to be nice for a little bit longer... not bad considering we got a foot of snow a few weeks back..

i really wanted to get one last hike in, up at mt monadnock, before the migration.. a little last minute action and my friend amanda and i were heading to new hampshire in a go cart. the weather was perfect..hiking in a long sleeve shirt and loving it. the trails were a little wet because of the snow a few weeks ago.. but it didnt really matter

we found the best spot ever to eat lunch almost at the top of the mountain with a beautiful view

found a small patch of snow that hadn't melted yet and amanda and i made a little snowman to put on top of one of the cairnes for hikers to enjoy on their way up the mountain.

the wind was ripping on top of the mountain.. maybe 50 mph?? its pretty amazing and the view from the top of a mountain on a nice day really puts things into perspective and makes you realize what is really important in life.

went for a walk in down town plymouth the other day..walked along this jetti and was surprised that people paint all over everything and make something so nice look like shit.. but i always enjoy some shitty artwork.

after not having the bus for the entire summer.... its back in action! to celebrate i decided to give it a fresh paint job. big thank you to my friend lindsey for giving me a hand painting it while she was in new england visiting. i was getting sick of the color blue and all the hippie stuff painted all over it..

did some exploring all over new england last week.. felt like i drove back and forth across it multiple times. found trees to walk on

halloween in plymouth

halloween is fun. everyone just dresses up in costumes and has a good time... for no reason. its great.

last year i spent my halloween in austin. i was charles manson. which basically consisted of me wearing work boots and a flannel and drawing a swastika on my forehead. i never try and put too much thought into my costume.. i like it to just come to me on its own. this year i just wanted to paint my face. i didnt care what i was dressed as... as long as i could paint my face. my friend ryan wanted to be davey crocket.

since we waited till the last minute.. we went to the thrift store to find our costumes.with a skeleton painted face i decided to wear my friends captains hat and a womans silk blouse...thats pretty much it.

went to a party at ryans friend jimmys. good food, good times.

the last month or two before i head south for the winter, is always spent working more than i usually do. trying to pack up some money to get me somewhere warm and keep me situated until i can figure out my next step.

i have been working with my friend ryan in plymouth mass at his boat yard getting boats ready for the winter. its always fun to do something out of the ordinary. and winterizing boats is a weird one.

my friends out here are amazing. i always really enjoy hanging out with them, its a whole new environment.

this is the best time to ride your bike in the north east... especially if you ride trails. the temperature is perfect, the fires burn beautifully, the mosquitos are almost gone, and everyone is stoked.
jake and i have been working on a new line at the cumby trails. we decided we wanted to hit some left hips and there was none there so we built a few... its coming along and should be getting dialed just in time for snow.. and then its the southern trail season..
